“The only thing that truly matters is whether a person will accept the God who will make him holy. At all costs, a person must have the right relationship with God.” Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest
In contemplating being right with God and following His command to “love thy neighbor as thyself” (Mark 12:31), I ask who is my neighbor?
Is it the man with the hump in his back holding the pack of Depends and bananas in the grocery line next to me?
Can it be the father whom I talk with at the bus stop each morning?
Or the woman at the end of my street who seems most social when talking to her dog?
What about when you are alone in your home, who is your neighbor?
Is it the dedicated writer who posted next to me in Five Minute Friday?
Is it the guy whose house is behind ours, in addition to the lovely people we know on either side of us?
Is it the far away friend who comes across my heart in prayer?
Jesus calls us to action with our neighbors … to love them, to shine upon them, to give them grace and space in our world. I am thankful today God has moved people who maybe never even talked to their next-door neighbors to allow a general love, care and concern to motivate them to help those affected by the recent hurricane.
It all comes back to love, doesn’t it? And everyone is our neighbor … God wants everyone to know about Him. He plays no favorites (Acts 10:34).
Let us look up for His wisdom and His amazing goodness. Let us set our feet and our hearts toward Heaven to help us love well during our time on this earth.

So true- the definition of neighbour can be a lot wider than we think. We all need to look for ways we can show love and kindness to others, whatever our situation. I’m glad we can be neighbours today, even across the ocean through FMF!

Julie, yes. Our “neighbor” is far more than the person who lives next store to us in an apartments or a subdivision. I think of neighbors as those who people our lives—whether we are on a first name basis or not. We have the opportunity to love well and reflect the presence of our Father. May we both be open to doing this as we walk through our days. 🙂
Great post!

I can’t see Jesus saying anyone isn’t our neighbor. He says to love the unloveable, our enemies, the least of these. I think it means everyone. As you said so well, “it all comes back to love.” Love your heart for Him.
