How utterly amazing our Mighty God spoke the Creation of the world.
“And God said” made light, animals, the seasons and you and me.
God directly speaks over 4,000 times in the Old Testament as http://www.quora.com counted the phrase “thus says the Lord”.
How many times did He speak without words?
Then, when Jesus walked the earth, do we count all His conversations and teaching as God speaking?
Because He is God.
God speaks all the time.
He loves to show Himself off.
He can’t help but change a heart when His voice comes from Heaven.
His trees whisper His name in the wind.
Snow silently falls, beauty bestowed. Only God could speak in silence.
Every child formed in the womb is the result of His Word of Life on earth.
Is it only in the quiet we hear Him?
Is it only in church that we can listen to Him?
By no means am I an “expert” in hearing Jesus. However, I feel strongly He wants me to share what I have learned.
Our Lord and Savior does not want to hoard His treasure so that only a select few see, hear and understand.
“While Jeremiah was still confined in the courtyard of the guard, the Word of the Lord came to him a second time.
This is what the Lord says, He who made the earth, the Lord who formed it and established it-the Lord is His name. ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know’” (Jeremiah 33:1-3).
Is it that easy, Julie?
Just call to God, and He will answer?
That’s the thing that trips us up in hearing Him speak. The process is easy in that anyone can seek Him, no matter their age, language, or knowledge.
But the waiting … in a culture where we expect immediate responses on social media or via text, where we whip out the credit card instead of saving, where we give up on important things because we don’t see immediate results.
Hearing Jesus speak requires waiting on Him. His time schedule does not have dates or deadlines. His timing is perfect because He is perfect:
Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning, great is Your faithfulness. I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore, I will wait for Him’
The Lord is good to those whose hope is in Him, to the one who seeks Him. It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord (Lamentations 3: 22-26).
As we wait to hear from our precious Jesus, we listen.
Listening to God is looking for Him everywhere. We listen not only with ears but with our eyes, hearts and souls.
Ask yourself: am I open to hearing what Jesus has to say?
If the answer is no, it is likely you have been blocking His voice, denying it or ignoring it.
If the answer is yes, I would suggest reading your Bible. This is a tangible way to seek Him. Keep in mind, you might not hear an audible voice from Heaven. His Living Active Word may leap off the page sounding louder or more important than other things you read.
God sees you when you read His Holy Bible. It pleases Him to see His children looking for Him and His truth.
Your faith grows as you listen to Him:
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the Word about Christ (Romans 10:17).
Your life extends to eternity when you listen to Him:
My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand (John 10:27-28).
Before I ever began sinking my teeth into the Bible, I heard Holy Spirit speak three words meant for only me. Those of you familiar with my story may recall, He spoke the words, “NO MORE ALCOHOL.”
Some believers have asked why didn’t he tell me to stop drinking?
Some believers have doubted my testimony.
Are you sure you heard an audible voice, Julie?
Yes, I am sure. It was early in my walk with God, and I thought everyone heard from Him in this way. I assumed it was a normal occurrence.
I am living proof God rewards childlike faith, seeking Him with the firm expectation He can and will do the impossible.
For after He spoke to me, He gave me visions of me speaking to His people, to you. He raised up new life in the broken me to be a worker in His Kingdom.
Jesus blessed me for seeking and listening, not for knowing or performing.
Four and a half years later, I still believe Jesus speaking to us is a normal, everyday occurrence.
Seek, wait and listen in any order, for He is speaking even now.

Oh such a beautiful expression of God’s leading and speaking! I am so glad that you called out to Him and listened! He truly does have such beauty to share with us, but you are so right–we have a hard time being still and waiting on Him. Even when I think that I have learned to listen so well, He convicts me and shows me I have so much more to learn! His mercy is so great to us. May He continue to bless you as you listen and share with us!

Thank you so much Bettie! Waiting and seeking and breathing and praying. Your listening to Him comes through your writing. I am not perfect either, but learning to lean far into Him especially before speaking.

Beautifully written, yes God still speaks to his children and yes I too have heard it speak to me more than once. To know and understand to Be still and Know that I Am God, for when we are still we do hear.

God does speak to us, as you said. We need to be willing to wait and also to listen and do what He is telling us to do. He gave us His Holy Spirit to enable us to do what He is asking us to do! Thanks so much for sharing, Julie.

Beautiful thoughts, Julie! I like your point about how certain Scriptures we are reading may capture our attention as something God is speaking. Sometimes in the same day, I will read/hear the same or similar Scriptures in various places-devotions, Bible, music, social media. That’s always a good aha moment! Thank you for your faithful dedication to writing, Julie.

Julie, I went to an earlier post to read. I always appreciate reading your testament, and your sincere belief in our Risen Savior. For me, spending time in the Word, in prayer, and in discussions with other Christians have enhanced my relationship with God.
