Staring at her wrenched hands, Mary tried to focus on breathing. There, she stood, unannounced, at Joseph’s family home. A brash move, but she felt she had no other choice.
Suddenly, the door flung open. She was met by his wide smile.
“Mary, what a wonderful surprise. Would you come – …”
Mary interrupted, “No, Joseph, I musn’t. I came to talk to you, you alone, my husband to be.”
Confused but not shaken, Joseph stepped outside and closed the door gently behind him.
“Whatever is it, Mary? Is everything all right?”
That was the wrong question to ask me. Lord, please help Joseph hear the truth. Though my belly is only just getting stiff, the baby will show soon. Oh Lord, how I wonder … will this work out? There are so many unknowns. As it is on earth when You are there in heaven and in my body?
Joseph reached out his hand, just as he did at their first meeting. He laid his palm on Mary’s sunken cheek. Mary’s eyes looked anywhere but at his.
Then she blurted, “Our Lord sent Gabriel, an angel. There on the path to get the water. This angel looked like a very tall man, dressed in white. I believed everything he said because he was sent by Our Lord.”
More than curious, Joseph leaned further forward and kissed her forehead.
There were tears. Mary couldn’t see through them. She cried as if to her Lord,
“Oh hear me, husband, I am with child. I am with God’s child. God chose us to be His son’s parents.”
Joseph’s hand dropped from her face. He looked away. Taking five steps back, he picked up a rock and threw it into the bush.
“Mary, why would you use God as an excuse? Don’t damn yourself to hell by telling me a lie. Just how could you? I thought what we had was … “
“Joseph, I didn’t. I didn’t do anything with anyone, except talk to Gabriel who told me Holy Spirit would bring God’s son to my stomach. And so He did. But I didn’t do what you think I did. Please trust in Our Lord, who is sending His Son for all the earth.”
“Listen to yourself,” he said.
Disgusted, Joseph turned his back on his young bride and ran into the wooded area behind his parent’s home.
That night, Mary lay in bed without words for her Lord. Her body felt strange as if no longer her own. She imagined a baby in her arms, a baby born holy, holier than her, holier than Joseph. Oh she longed to nuzzle a newborn to her full breast, the giver of milk to the young life. She desired her husband’s arm around her as she fed their baby, a family.
Lord, I am afraid if I speak to you, I will cast blame. Please, please help Joseph. Lord, I cannot do this without him.
While Joseph lay in bed that night, he looked up to heaven, “Lord of all, You are righteous and holy. Your law says I can divorce Mary if she has committed adultery.”
Did I say divorce? I, Lord of all, says marriage between you and Mary, chosen for My Son. Yes, Joseph, Mary is pregnant by My Spirit. Mary told you the truth. The question is do you believe Me?
Joseph lay prostrate on his floor before the Lord. All he could say is, “Yes, Lord. Yes, Lord. Yes, Lord … will You please forgive Your servant for his haste and judgment and unbelief?”
For several hours, Joseph remained bowing low.
God requires sacrifice of all His children. A humble heart receives correction. A loving child praises and serves the Father. Sacrifice is both correction and service leading to the ultimate surrender of self.
Joseph understood that now.
Ohhhh! The wonder of baby Jesus! We are nearing closer to Him in this story. Do you sense that too?
It is so amazing to imagine how Jesus was at work as the Savior as He grew, even in Mary’s womb. Forever Our Savior, the Word from the beginning, the Lion until the end of the age.
Praise His name! Hallelujah!
May God bless each of you who are here to read this section of the story.
