I used to be an over-the-top planner. It is one of those natural strengths that butts up against His Spirit in me.
Each December I would go through my personal file folders … actual, tactile ones. Also my closet and eventually my frig. Purging the old to make room for the new. In my crisp, clean calendar, I would frantically anticipate as much as was humanly possible to scribble in.
There’s control in planning, scheduling. The devil weedles his way in to spur us on, to gain more control and plan far ahead, reassuring us in bold-faced lies that we know our schedule best.
We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps (Proverbs 16:9).
God is faithful. He doesn’t want us to continue relying on our own thoughts/plans/strengths.
You can make many plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail (Proverbs 19:21).
He is our wonderful counselor, and we shall honor Him like Mary Magdalene did in the garden near the tomb, “Rabboni” (John 20:16). Teacher, she called Him. She who was broken when she thought someone took her Lord’s body.
Set time for Jesus. I will join you. We cannot do this life without Him. Casting Crowns sing a song called “Make Room” that says, “when you make room in your heart and trade your dreams for His glory”.
It is too tempting to make this life about us. We feel accomplished when we succeed. We compete for recognition in the workplace, in families, on social media … snapping a selfie seems innocent enough, until you are lavished with praise meant for Our King.
Be tenacious about your time with God. Someone, even if that’s an anxious puppy, may have to wait until you consume His manna for the day.
Be consistent, create a routine with Jesus. We schedule lots of life, from gym time to our favorite Netflix. Are we worshiping other gods other than or in addition to the One true Lord of All?
Last but not least, be excited to spend time with your Savior who died for you. What an amazing offer to be near to our Lord who saved us from death. How incredible it is to know Jesus, that one day we will see Him in full.
Can we count our plans, our goals, our dreams garbage if we grow closer in a personal relationship with Christ? Paul speaks our collective hearts when he says, “But whatever were gains to me, I now consider loss for the sake of Christ” Philippians 3:8).
Be on guard against evil intentions to muddle your time with Jesus. A common lie Christians allow into their lives is that only certain people have faith like Paul, or Billy Graham, or Mary Magdalene.
Brothers and sisters, you have been chosen by the Most High, jealous God. He looks for those who follow Him, who love Him with all their hearts, souls and minds.
The Lord is watching everywhere, keeping His eye on both the evil and the good (Proverbs 15:3).
Let us not displease our God with stagnant faith. Rather, let’s set our reminders on our phones for Jesus. Let’s forgo some social time to be with Our Lord. Let’s never brag about falling asleep while praying. Rather, let’s boast in the mighty power of God, who freed the Israelites from Egypt and freed me from addiction and atheism.
We who believe do life with Christ first – period.
~~~
Let me know how I may pray for you. I know life is hard. Believe me, I do. When we make God first, we begin to see life through heaven’s lens. His plans prevail and are not always transparent, but His wisdom and amazing presence help us stand when we feel like falling, help us strain forward because He knows we won’t turn back, help us be still and trust He is fighting in ways we cannot. Praise forever the name of Jesus!
This is the reason I have no longer focused on any traditional New Year’s Resolution. My focus is on a 40-day challenge to go forward with purpose and faith based on Exodus 14:13-15. What is behind us is behind us and will be swallowed up in the sea that is before us. We need to go forward without murmuring, without complaining and resting our faith and testimony on Christ and all that he represents. This includes taking up our journey through the Old Testament and come unto Christ and be all the more converted by the power and authority of the Holy Spirit.
Thank you. I am posting daily devotions based on the Old Testament study I am engaged in, as well as inspiring messages on the 40-day Challenge. It is amazing to see the power and influence of scripture and how to apply them into our lives.
Amen and Amen. Needed exactly what I just read. The Lord always finds a way to speak to us, even by your post. Boy am thankful to know His voice when I hear(or read) it because He reminds me that I am His and what a merciful God is He even let me be called His. Thank you and God bless you Julie, Happy New Year sister.
Oh I am just now seeing this on your blog!! Happy New Year dear Julie!! You are such an inspiration and encouragement to me!! Thank you Dear Jesus for Julie!!
My week ends are consumed as a Hospice nurse and this New Year week end God called many of His children into glory!! I am most certainly in awe of how the Lord orchestrates our passing into heavenly realms. The people he places so perfectly on assignment for His Glory, for He has the exact second He welcomes us into His precious presents For most definitely it is not our plans, but His.
So I would like to encourage everyone to lean on the Lord with every breath you take, it is truly a gift.
Julie, dear sister, this post is SO timely ~as all of your messages. The Lord spoke directly to ME through YOU~ Literally I was setting goals at my computer when I went to search for you on IG and here. You were heavy on my heart and mind. Those of us that believe must put him first~above everything (and puppies!). Fighting my brain injury over these years has been “aided” by being organized. And goal setting helps my brain functioning by not forgetting what it actually is I said I would do. But I also know that my time with Christ is what feeds me and makes me the most successful! Lord, I lay my own plans aside ~you know my true motivation and desires~I trust you to design my continued growth in your way only. I lift up my sister, Julie and everyone reading. May we all have you as our focus as we continue our journey. I love you sister! I thank you for your incredible testimony and witness. ❤️🙏🏻
Praising Our Life-Saving Lord right now for your life Karla. He knows your struggles. Look how far He has brought you! Yes, Lord, I agree with my sister in prayer that all who like to control their plans remember You are first, Your Way comes before ours and may we bow to You in heart, in speech, in behavior and mind.
Julie, your words speak from the Spirit. We are called to focus on God when facing uncertain plans. I am praying that Jesus will be walking with me (He’s always there), but more importantly, that I trust Him faithfully.
I am making plans (with God’s help) to soon travel to Montana to spend time with my mother, who is is recovering from broken hip surgery.
Thank you Richard for letting me know I obeyed God with this post. I am struggling to with so many prayer requests, feels like so many are hurting physically and spiritually. Our Lord guided me to pray like I mean it for some, allow others to pray for others. When I say I will pray now that the Lord will orchestrate this trip to your mom’s, I mean it 🙂
